One of our favorite annual shows is our Net Worth By Age series (you can watch the latest edition, from earlier this year, below). Although comparison can be a thief of joy, seeing how you stack up to other Americans the same age as you can help determine if you are behind or ahead of the curve. This information can be tremendously valuable to know if you need to adjust course by saving/investing more or take a moment to recognize you are crushing the journey to financial independence. However, the median American may not always be the best marker of success, so we’ll discuss some other indicators to keep an eye on as you track your own net worth.
I appreciate your articles and videos. For those who have sacrificed and worked hard to live below our means in an environment of excess that has largely lead to a society living at a deficit, it is fulfilling to see these numbers and feel rewarded for implementing and executing on a successful saving strategy. I am 50 and my wife is 48 and we have maxed our 401k since 22 and 24 respectively. While I look at the balance from time to time and feel that it should be higher given how differently we lived from our friends in our younger years, this article makes me feel fortunate, grateful and blessed beyond words.
For numbers nerds like myself it is always fun to compare and benchmark to others. How does marriage play into these numbers? Do you double all the numbers or is being married already factored into the averages.
